Assigment #2
The Handmaid's Tale, Margaret Atwood, fictional novel, meaning is that restriction in human desire and nature, will cause the person to long for their wishes so much that they will change. Ofrred is the main character in the Handmaid's tale, she repetitively illustrates and tells us in 3rd person, how she hopes to do the actions that are restricted against her. When Offred plays with the food, sinking her hands on the cushion bread, she "hunger to commit the act of touch"(11) In this time period, women are discriminated, not allowed to do almost anything, and even worst are grouped in different social classes based off of colors. Being the color red, and given information in the text, Offred is doomed to live as a symbol in her life as something holy, or clean. included as a wall to her whim, women have laws to what not to do in their lives, therefore the act of touch is prohibited to Offred. Offred also explains that earlier she spies on her piers, claiming that she has never done this in the past, she wishes to hang out with them. Not only this, Offred urges many other objects and life styles. One example to this is when she talks to the commander's wife, Offred "looked at the cigarette with longing. Like liquor... they are forbidden."(14). She covet so much, she looks at her colleague with a sense of hatred, and dislike. She only respects the commanders wife, because she expect a change of attitude and characteristics comparing from her recent masters. This also gives the reader that she even expect a few laws to be bend for her. Offred persona changes as the reader goes along the chapters. Offred walking pass some guards, moving her "hips a little...It's like...teasing a dog with a bone out of reach"(22) Offred lust for dreams, made her do such action of tease to a hard working guard to be pressured. She later says how she "hopes they get hard..." and even saying she enjoys to have the power, to achieve her wishes. By this change from obedient girl to a tease, it shows how Ms. Atwood lights up the meaning of the novel. How someone with so much desire will be effected to change if they are restricted.
